The top six names seem pretty much set, and I do think Lagesson has the edge over Bouchard for the No. These are not pairings, but a depth chart based on possible usage. It’s clearly the most exposed area of the roster and there is possible danger here. I have suggested through this process that Holland won’t hesitate to address this position if a slump or injury dictates a move. Skinner would be classified as an emergency option, although the organization remains high on his ability. Forsberg’s presence suggests management is aware of the aging process and we could see three (or more) goalies in Edmonton during 2020-21. Smith is a year older and could falter, and one of the two veterans could get hurt.
#NHL 21 ROSTER UPDATE WINDOWS#
Last season saw Smith grab huge playing time in specific windows when he was hot and that may occur again in 2020-21. Goalies (4)īased on last season, I think it’s reasonable to project Koskinen as the starter in this scenario and Smith as the backup.

For our purposes, I’m going to assume names like Dmitri Samorukov could play in the NHL after the KHL season but will not be part of the initial NHL training camp. The late start to the NHL season (we could be looking at a February start if COVID-19 continues its romp across North America) could bring all kinds of names into play over the course of the 2020-21 campaign.
#NHL 21 ROSTER UPDATE SERIES#
The assumed invite listĭuring the recent “reasonable expectations” series I estimated the NHL roster while flying blind. The Oilers have added several new names, among them Tyson Barrie, Dominik Kahun, Kyle Turris, Jesse Puljujarvi and Anton Forsberg. Oscar Klefbom is injured and may miss the entire season. Several players have moved along, including Matt Benning, Riley Sheahan and Andreas Athanasiou. Right Wing (5): Zack Kassian, Kailer Yamamoto, Josh Archibald, Alex Chiasson, Patrick Russell.Left Wing (6): Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Tyler Ennis, Andreas Athanasiou, James Neal, Joakim Nygard, Tyler Benson.Centre (7): Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Riley Sheahan, Jujhar Khaira, Gaetan Haas, Ryan McLeod, Cooper Marody.Right Defence (4): Ethan Bear, Adam Larsson, Matt Benning, Evan Bouchard.

Left Defence (6): Darnell Nurse, Oscar Klefbom, Caleb Jones, Kris Russell, William Lagesson, Philip Broberg.Goalies (3): Mikko Koskinen, Mike Smith, Stuart Skinner. When the Oilers last fired a puck in anger, it was in the bubble and the training camp roster from July 2020 is a good starting point. Here’s a pre-camp look at the likely roster and each player’s chance of making the big club (assuming a 27-man roster). That should mean fewer trips to the panic room for fans of the team when the season gets underway. The Oilers don’t have plug-and-play replacements for Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but there should be a “next man up” option of NHL quality in other spots. If you’ve been following the offseason moves by Edmonton you’ll know the theme for 2020-21: Increased depth in all areas.
